BRIDGING THE LANGUAGE DIVIDE, AN OFTEN WILD AND GENERALLY JOYOUS RIDE

In the 1980’s English-speaking researchers were in the frustrating situation of knowing exciting

things were going on in France with titles like “didactical contract” and “didactical situations”, but only

in the French language. Nicolas Balacheff of France and Martin Cooper of Australia decided to remedy

this by producing a translation of a compendium of the works with which Guy Brousseau had launched

the field starting in the 1960’s. The task proved to be Herculean, and I had the good fortune to join in it,

first as a “first reader” and eventually as a translator and editor, a position also occupied by Rosamund

Sutherland of England. That time and effort launched me (with Balacheff’s help) into a decades-long,

description-defying working and personal relationship with Guy Brousseau and his wife, Nadine. I will

attempt to convey some of the insights this gave me into this man brimming with brilliance, generosity

and very strong opinions.

Dans les années 1980, les chercheurs anglophones se trouvaient dans la situation frustrante de savoir

qu'il se passait des choses passionnantes en France avec des titres tels que « contrat didactique » et «

situations didactiques », mais seulement en français. Nicolas Balacheff (France) et Martin Cooper

(Australie) ont décidé de remédier à cette situation en produisant une traduction d'un recueil des travaux

avec lesquels Guy Brousseau avait lancé le domaine à partir des années 1960. La tâche s'est avérée

herculéenne et j'ai eu la chance d'y participer, d'abord en tant que « première lectrice », puis en tant que

traductrice et éditrice, une position également occupée en Angleterre par Rosamund Sutherland. Ce

temps et ces efforts m'ont permis (avec l'aide de Balacheff) d'entamer une relation de travail et

personnelle de plusieurs décennies avec Guy Brousseau et sa femme Nadine, qui défie toute description.

J'essaierai de vous faire part de quelques-unes des idées que cela m'a permis d'acquérir sur cet homme

brillant, généreux, et aux convictions bien arrêtées.
