The Australian University Census on Psychosocial Safety Climate:

The Australian university sector, driven by deregulation and a productivity-and-profit agenda, has become a maelstrom of governance failures, excessive Vice Chancellor (VC) salaries, continual restructuring and mergers, budget constraints, job losses, and wage theft. As a result university management is under intense scrutiny from the Federal government, unions and community. However little attention is given to irrefutable evidence of a staff mental health crisis and redressing rising stress levels. The problem is a very poor organisational climate for worker psychological health (PSC) −across the sector−and very high levels of emotional exhaustion. The presentation will discuss the results and reaction to a world first census which publicly ranked university performance on PSC. Our aim was to provide a strong social stimulus for improvement and an evidence-based feedback system regarding what interventions work.
